Statement of condolences by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney, T.D., to the people of Mexico
The Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D., has expressed his condolences to the people of Mexico on the death and injury suffered as a result of yesterday’s earthquake.
Speaking from New York, where his is attending the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister Coveney said:
“It was with deep sadness that I learned about the massive earthquake which hit Mexico yesterday and I wish to extend my condolences to the people of Mexico and in particular to the families of those who lost their lives or have been injured as a result of the earthquake.
Those who may still be trapped under fallen buildings are very much in all of our thoughts and we pray that the brave men and women of the local emergency services may be able to rescue them.
As of now, we have no indications to suggest that any Irish citizens have been affected.
It is at difficult times like these for one of our members that we are reminded of the value of the solidarity and support of the United Nations family.
I hope to have the opportunity to sympathise in person with my Mexican counterpart, Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, who is also here in New York this week.”
